This is the first masters level course that I have completed. I was initially overwhelmed by the thoughts of Twitter and personal webpages, but this course has allowed me to begin to use social media to expand my knowledge related to clinical practice and follow what nurse leaders are doing in Canada and around the world. I have even taken some of the learning back to my practice and I am contributing to our weekly staff news letter with clinical pearls I discover online. It has been a great way to directly introduce professional social media into my practice.
Admittedly being and ER nurse I wasn’t sure if the broad theoretical concepts we discussed in this course would be of direct benefit to my practice. Approaching learning at this level has taught me to synthesize information I am gathering and reflect on it’s applications in my professional setting. Collaborating with students across the country in multiple health fields has helped to understand healthcare from multiple levels, which was my goal with taking the MHST program, so I am looking forward to future studies.
The key learning points I take away from this course in terms of our healthcare system is the multiple levels of influence and the need to be prepared for the future of healthcare in Canada. As healthcare leaders looking to the future, advocating for policy and legislation that seeks to make all Canadians healthier and evidence based interventions aimed at creating health and avoiding illness will be essential in order to create a sustainable healthcare system in the future.
